We jammed on it for the longest time, and Russ wrote the words to it a few days later. It was this song that launched the desire to record, and within a week or two, we had it down, but I first had to re-learn Audacity from the ground up. Of course, we didn't have any good recording equipment, either, but we made it work. As it came together, we were thrilled with the sound, and the lead guitar that Russ played was like icing on the cake. It still gives me a lift right at that point in the song. And I was the skeptic... like, fiddle with electric guitar? But this song showed me that it could work brilliantly, and our unique sound started to take shape.
We were so pleased with the mix that it went to the sound engineer as is. It's got mistakes that just seem to be the perfect mistakes, and the tempo isn't steady, but for me that simply means it's human. Not sure Dave was so happy dealing with it, but he did a great job adding the percussion. The Artist is on Soundcloud here.
The lyrics came together the way most of Russ's songs do: They just flow out. Because faith is such a huge influence in his life, the biblical references surfaced. The result is a song that just makes you feel good. Our live audiences sincerely enjoy it. I still enjoy listening to it. The way it came together is a bit like a small miracle.
